  11. INTRODUCTION
  12. =============
  13. This document contains information about TextMerge, a Drop Box by Robert
  14. Gibson. Information specific to TextMerge itself is given in “Using
  15. TextMerge”. Characteristics of Drop Boxes in general are discussed in the
  16. “Using Drop Boxes” section. Finally, information about the author is
  17. provided in the last section, “About the Author”.

  19. USING TEXTMERGE
  20. ================
  21. These sections are fairly detailed descriptions of how and why you may
  22. use TextMerge. There are many ways to use, and purposes for, this program,
  23. that I don’t discuss.

  25. Who Will Use TextMerge
  26. ---------------------
  27. •  TextMerge is an application written mainly for users who regularly
  28.     call on-line services and capture various text to a file. Users can then
  29.     pass the files through TextMerge and merge the files into one big one.
  30.  
  31. •  If you use TextMerge, please please please send me a note. I love to

  35. Using TextMerge
  36. ---------------
  37. •  Drag sets of files, folders, or disks into the application, “Drop Box-
  38.     style”. TextMerge will scan folders and disks provided, and will
  39.     modify ALL text files in ALL of the directories provided, no matter
  40.     what their depth. Drop Boxes require Apple Events, and thus System
  41.     7.0 or higher.

  43. •  The order in which files are moved depends on the order in which they
  44.     were selected in the Finder. The first one you select is the first one
  45.     in the merged file.
  46.  
  47. •  To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Cancelling in the
  48.     middle of a file might not prevent part of the current file from being
  49.     copied into the merged file. If deletion is on, aborting will not cause
  50.     the current file to be deleted. I suggest that you be ABSOLUTELY
  51.     SURE that you can lose the data if you turn delete on.

  53. •  Double-click on the application to change the preferences and see the
  54.     About... box.
  55.  
  56. Preferences
  57. -----------
  58. •  The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the
  59.     preferences dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct
  60.     parameters have been set up. You can modify these if you wish. If
  61.     you don't want to see that window again, just say OK. You will have to
  62.     explicitly ask for for the Preferences window the next time you wish
  63.     to change anything.

  65. •  To show the Preferences dialog in Drop Box mode, hold down the option
  66.     key while the program is launching.
  67.  
  68. •  The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. Set the number of carriage
  69.     returns inserted to separate each file (enter 0 for no returns), what
  70.     creator the resulting file will have, and whether or not the processed
  71.     file should be deleted after processing.
  72.  
  73. •  The file creator is the owner of the text file. For example, the initial
  74.     value is ‘ttxt’, so the owner is a TeachText document. It determines
  75.     what icon the file will have in the Finder, and what application will
  76.     be opened when you double-click on it. Choose the Same as... button to
  77.     select a text file of the desired type, if you aren’t sure what exact
  78.     file type it is that you want.
  79.  
  80. USING DROP BOXES
  81. =================
  82. Drop Boxes are applications which can take advantage of System 7’s Apple
  83. Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application icon just as you
  84. would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory. The Drop
  85. Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits. You can
  86. also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in just
  87. one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
  88. combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
  89. files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
  90. directories within those dropped in will be modified.
